Review:
Since Why Why Love, the pseudo sequel to this series, is currently being aired in Taiwan, I thought I should write a review for this series before I forget about it. Like many series that had came out in the recent years, this drama is also loosely based on a Japanese manga. In trying to be true to the manga style humor, the series had many “hyper” moments which are enjoyable, if not overdone. Rainie is cute and played her role well for the most part. It make me miss the silly school girl crushes of the good old days. I liked the beginning better when things are light and humorous. As things get more serious, the series seemed to be a little dragged on. This is especially true when they tried over and over again to explain that the ‘devil’ is not such a bad guy after all. OK, we got it, he’s not really a bad guy, now move on.

As for Mike, well … I know some girls are obsessed with him … but that doesn’t change the fact that the role doesn’t completely fit him. Why? Well, physically he won’t cut it as a ‘tough guy’ in the real world. When fully clothed in leather jacket and the whole ensemble … ok, fine … but when he’s shirtless and you can see the body … he’s a stick figure. (If you don’t believe me … do a search for behind the scene stuffs and press releases … he’s that skinny). Masuyama (the yellow haired sidekick), would make a more believable ‘tough guy’. One more thing … I can’t stand the ’smiling poses’. They don’t look devilish like they supposed to be .. they are more like … I got botox on my face and I can’t stop smiling … aka… the Joker’s face (yes … he’s from the Batman series in case you don’t remember). These poses are later found on the ‘clone’ (the brother) … but that is another story. Beside that, when he acted normally … it’s not too bad … it’s more believable …

And the supporting cast? I like the energetic mother. Granted she seemed a bit too hyper at times, but it’s all good. Their relationship reminded me of “Gilmore Gilrs”. If you ever watched that show, you’ll know what I’m talking about. The story of the girl friend (Pei Lin) is more believable … more common perhaps … but it rings true. I wish they create a minor story for the other girlfriend … she’s cute enough. Some might say that it’s the surprises, other might say it’s the inconsistencies … whatever it is … the story change paces quite a bit. If you believe in the first scene, yes … that daydream world … you probably be shocked by what happened 2 episodes later … Over all, the series was an enjoyable one … even though they changed the ending from the manga …. it got stale near the end … so you can skip 2 or 3 episodes without missing much.

Rating: ★★★½☆
